The following expansions are available for the game Manhattan TraffIQ:

  • mini expansion “EMPIRE STATE BUILDING“: This module expands the game by an interesting tactical choice: When and by whom will the Empire State Building be placed?
  • expansion “BROADWAY“: This module expands the game with diagonal roads. Two city tiles are already exchanged in the two starting scenarios to give more movement possibilities to taxis and trucks. The remaining 7 tiles slowly introduce the diagonal roads into the game. They allow more complex moves against your opponents to get them off the roads. The expansion “Broadway” requires more attentions from players and brings more tactical possibilities, so it is recommended for player who want to increase the element of “taking out vehicles of competitors” in the game.
  • expansion “5th AVENUE“: This module contains the materials for a fifth player and 9 additional city iles. In keeping with the name of the expansion some of the new city tiles sites shows some of the attracted situated on 5th Avenue in Manhattan. There are purposely no new rules or mechanisms contained in this expansion. It does contain a recommendation though how the alternate starting scenario “Central Park” can be setup enlarged.
  • expansion “EAST RIVER”: The 9 city tiles this expansion each allow the additional drawing city tiles when you place them with a ferry line. However, it is a matter of luck to pull these tiles. The special privilege to draw such a tile is countered by the difficulty of placing these tiles so that you can place your own vehicle. The expansion “East River” requires additional tactical decisions, but also increases the luck element somewhat. Further expansions are under development, for example, the “INDUSTRIAL AREAS” with factory buildings, “METRO” with underground connections, “WALL STREET” with speculative bets …

FAQs on the expansion:

Expansion „Empire State Building“
Can the Empire State Building be relocated during the game under certain circumstances?
No. The Empire State Building once placed remains until the end of the game where it was placed.

Do the vehicles on the corners of a city tile with the Empire State Building already count double points during the game?
No. Vehicles on the corners of a city tile with the Empire State Building are not stronger during the game than on other intersections / road corners. Only at the end of the game are vehicles there given double points for scoring.

Can the Empire State Building also be placed on city tiles from expansions, for example ones with diagonal roads from the Broadway Extension?
Yes. The “Empire State Building” piece can be placed on any city tile with red areas / at least one round red “skyscraper” icon and no attractions. Diagonal roads on the tiles of the Broadway expansion are not blocked thereby.

Expansion „Broadway“
Must city tiles with diagonal roads be placed so that already existing diagonal roads (such as the Broadway of the starting scenario) are extended?
No. The same rules apply to city tiles with diagonal roads as with any other city tiles. Even diagonal roads need not be extended.

Can vehicles on diagonal roads also be removed?
Yes. When a vehicle is placed on an intersection / road corner, are which there are also one or more diagonal roads, or it is driven there, then diagonal roads are also considered if the active player has more points than other players with vehicles on this road.

Expansion „East River“
Can you place city tiles with a ferry line next to tiles with water but without ferry?
No. Water tiles with and without ferry have different symbols: without ferry a white ship on a blue background and with ferry a different, blue ship on a white background. You may only place tiles with matching symbols next to each other.

Is the placement of the first tile with a ferry treated differently from the placement of all other tiles with a ferry?
Yes. It is impossible to extend a ferry line as long as there are no tiles with a ferry line. Therefore, the first ferry tile must be placed with its other side. In order to create an incentive to be the first to place a tile with ferry, you get the privilege to draw an additional city tile.

Do you have to place a ferry tile so that you extend a ferry line?
No. Each city tile of the “East River” extension can be placed next to other tiles using other sides than the ferry and then works like any other tile. However, the player then gets no additional city tile, unless it was the first tile with a ferry (see above).

Can there be several ferry lines?
Yes. Whenever ferry tiles are placed with their other sides, they create new “connection points” for ferry lines.

Can you draw two additional city tiles when you attach two ferry tiles?
Yes. Every time you extend a ferry line by a tile it allows you to draw an additional tile. If you use both actions for matching a tile with the “ferry” side, you can therefore draw two city tiles.

Can you draw two additional city tiles, when you connect two ferry lines with a single ferry tile?
No. If you place a ferry tile, you are only allowed to draw one additional city tile, even if you made one ferry line out of two.

How do you handle the privilege of “drawing another city tile”?
Whoever places a tile “East River” so that he gets the privilege of drawing another city tile, should draw it immediately and place it face down in front of him until the end of his turn. This is because (as with another other additionally drawn tile) this tile may not be placed in the same turn.

Manhattan TraffIQ Expansions

5th Avenue
This module contains the components for a fifth player and 9 additional city tiles. In keeping with the name of the expansion some of the new city tiles show attractions located on 5th Avenue in Manhattan. New rules or mechanisms have purposely been omitted in this extension, but it does contain a recommendation for an alternative starting scenario for “Central Park” with an enlarged initial layout. The expansion “5th Avenue” is recommended for players who want to play “Manhattan TraffIQ” with five players.

Empire State Building
This module extends the game by an exciting tactical decision: By whom and when and when will the Empire State Building by placed? Thereafter the confrontation of the players is intensified, because now there is increasing competing for this location. Although this expansion consists of only a single piece, which actually only affects the scoring at game end, it clearly changes the game. The expansion “Empire State Building” is recommended for players who love confrontation. However, the frustration factor also increases if you lose the competition. It is not recommended for families with children under the age of 12.

Broadway
This module extends the game with diagonal roads. Two city tiles are already exchanged in the two starting scenarios to give the vehicles more freedom of movement for taxi and delivery trips. The remaining 7 tiles bring the diagonal roads gradually into play. They can be used to perform more sophisticated moves to remove competitors. The extension “Broadway” requires more attention from players and creates additional tactical possibilities, and is therefore recommended players who want to strengthen the element of “removing competing vehicles”. It is not recommended for families with children under the age of 12.

East River
The 9 tiles of this expansion allow the additional drawing of a tile when you match a ferry line. However, it is a matter of luck to draw these tiles in the first place. The privilege of drawing another city tile is countered by the difficulty placing these tiles so that you can place your own vehicles. The expansion “East River” requires additional tactical decisions, but also increases the luck element slightly. Direct confrontation is not increased. Therefore, this extension is also recommended for families with children under the age of 12.
